Trees and Shrubs of Kern County (Jan 2013) Pseudotsuga macrocarpa (Abies macrocarpa Vasey 1861) Mayr 1890. Bigcone Douglas fir. Tree with an erect straight bole, generally reaching 18 m, to as high as 44 m and with occasional long wide spreading branches, nearly at right angles, and many much shorter similar spreading branches , all of which occurs from base to treetop without tapering; bark of trunk furrowed, ridges thick and broad, rounded; branchlets often hanging, especially from lower branches; leaves needle-like, bluish green with paler stomata bands on lower side, spirally arranged, 2.5–5 cm long, shedding after 5 yrs; female cones ellipsoidal to conical, 3–4× longer than wide, 10–18 cm long, symmetrical to asymmetrical, with exserted tridentate bracts ~8 mm wide; seeds triangular, 10 mm long, 8 mm wide, and with a short round wing 12 mm long. Southern Coasts, Transverse and Peninsular ranges. Type from “mountains near San Felipe”, San Diego Co., CA. Bigcone Douglas fir forest recognized in MCV2 when >30% relative cover in the tree canopy. Kern Co.: An occasional to common conifer of the Jeffrey pine forest in the Mt. Pinos region, reaching it northern limits on Tecuya Ridge west of Fort Tejon (Twisselmann), 600–1,000 m.
