Mojave Desert, CA/NV state line.  Apr 2005. This appears to be a much-branched woody shrub, a habit that is not known for this genus.  While one may also suspect a herbaceous plant growing up through a dead bush, the much-branched herbaceous stems are nevertheless evident.
